Homeschool 2011-2012

R1 is in third grade this year – we are continuing with the My Father’s World curriculum as we really love it. I’m adding First Language Lessons for the Well-Trained Mind (actually, we’ll be finishing it, we did more than half last year), Singapore Math and Spelling Power.

R2 is in Kindergarten – she’ll be doing most of the same things that R1 does and when something is too difficult I have some things from Confessions of a Homeschooler for her to do, R3 will also do the same.

I’m lucky and excited that this year of MFW is Exploring Countries and Cultures – so a lot of the things we do and learn the girls will be able to do also! It’s going to be fun. Stay tuned for lots of pics and blog posts about our schooling.

Today was day one. We made passports and while R1 did his geography pre-test the girls practiced writing.

And then we made a Rolly Poly Terrarium:

and, of course, swam with our friends!!

Button Pictures and Notebooks

R2 and I went to Target the other day to pick up a few school supplies. They had these cute composition books for $1 and I told her to pick one for herself and her sister. She asked if she could also get one for Trinity, so I said sure.

Fast forward to today, Trin came over to play and swim – and ended up getting hurt by the pool. While hanging out and watching a movie they decided to draw/write in their notebooks.

I was surfing and came upon this blog post by a sweet friend of mine and thought I’d give it a shot. The girls LOVED it!!

Copywork Jar

I found this blog post and LOVE the idea. One of our biggest struggles last year was copy work – R1 just didn’t want to copy what FLL was assigning him. So, I’m hoping that this jar will make it easier this year as I’ll be throwing in some fun stuff, too.

Here’s our jar:

It’s nowhere near as pretty as hers, but one day maybe I’ll get around to decorating it. :)

Now to fill it. I need short poem suggestions, great quotes… help me out!!

Can We Put It On The List?

A few years ago I got the wonderful idea from someone to let the kids put the things they beg for in the store on a “list.” Now, I’ll be honest, I rarely buy things from this list but the simple act of them knowing that it’s on a list and I’m aware that they want it gets out of the store with no tears and minimal begging.

These days the list is pictures on my phone. Yesterday I had to get a few things from Target and R2 tagged along. Her birthday is in August so she’s mindful of that, LOL. But the list is good no matter what time of year it is. It’s a great little ritual to help us all.

If you’re interested in R2′s list from yesterday – it’s here on facebook. :) Of course, there are things on her list that aren’t pictured, this is just the stuff that caught her eye in Target yesterday!

We Roll With It (Ministry of Real at it’s Best)

Those who know me know I’m not the world’s best housekeeper. Yes, I’ve gotten better lately (thank you, Adderall!) but a lot of little things still slip by me. Add to that the kids taking over the dishes (unloading and loading the dishwasher, mainly) and you get this:

Yeah you’re seeing that right, stop rubbing your eyes and blinking..

There’s a sprout in our sink. So… what do you do with a sprout? That’s right, you plant it. Yes, we did!! The kids are placing bets as to what it is and the winner gets a prize. :) Welcome to my life.

Back from the Living Dead

or what felt like it, anyway. Last Tuesday R2 started vomiting at 11 pm and didn’t stop for 18, yes EIGHTEEN, hours, my poor sweet baby. At 4:45 R3 woke up and vomited for 2 hours and then slept, woke up and was fine. When R2 finally stopped she had what seemed like the flu. Cough, fever, exhaustion. Then Friday I started feeling a bit bad. Saturday I couldn’t get out of bed and R3 joined me.

Fast forward over a week and two doc visits later and today R3 and I are slightly better – after starting antibiotics.

I have so much to do. We cancelled the birthday party for the third Sat in a row. *thud* And I have to bake goodies with 3 gallons of blueberries we picked that Tues R2 started puking!

Grateful for Puke Bugs

My sweet middle child, my first daughter spent 18 of the last 48 hours puking. It finally ceased at 6pm last night and she slept until 10am this morning. My heart broke for her – a tummy bug is one of those things Mommy Cures are useless against. I tried, don’t get me wrong, but nothing helped. Her little body just kept getting hit wave after wave.

I’m thankful for that tummy bug for it reminded me to be thankful. It reminded me that many moms watch their babies wither away, their bodies attacked by uncurable diseases, some whose bodies attack themselves. Grateful that it was just a bug, just a momentary blip of on the radar of her healthy life. I look into her gaunt face this morning, she looks like a different child and I am SO INCREDIBLY grateful that she is ok. That this afternoon she will look and feel so much better and that tomorrow she will most likely be back to her smiling, sassy self.

My heart breaks for any mother who has to look at her child and NOT know that child will get better. Or worse still, know they won’t.

Thank you, Father God, for tummy bugs and sore throats. For helping me to remember your power and grace. For keeping my children safe and healthy.
